Catherine McCarthy

Veterinary risk lead, UK Office for Sanitary and Phytosanitary Trade Assurance (UOSPSTA), Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), UK

I am veterinarian, Diplomate of ECVPH (population medicine) and veterinary risk lead within the UK Office for Sanitary and Phytosanitary Trade Assurance (UKOSPSTA) in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), UK. I provide advice on animal and public health risks of ongoing trade and new market access requests. My role largely involves interpreting and communicating results from risk assessments, as well as providing advice on risk mitigation measures. I previously worked as a senior risk assessor in the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), UK and Wageningen BioVeterinary Research (WBVS), Netherlands.

Catherine will deliver:

  • Talk on quantitative microbial risk assessments (QMRA)
  • Workshop on using risk assessments to understand efficacy of abattoir interventions

Risk assessments are not as intimidating as they first seem. They help to structure complex biological systems into organised processes. Come along to find out more!
